‘The Bamboo Experiments’ this proposal for 12 unit, 3 bedroom residential development in Apapa, Lagos looked at using bamboo as a replacement for the common ‘burglar bar’ used as security barriers for windows throughout Nigeria. Here our aim was to express this theme where it becomes an integral part of the façade fenestration along with symbols drawn from traditional adrinka. Adinkra are visual symbols that represent concepts or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics and pottery among the Ashantis of Ashanti Kingdom and Baoulés of Cote d’Ivoire. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features.
