This GTBank commercial branch is set on a 1500 square metre land in Wuse-2 Area of Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. The peculiar character of the context dictated by the mix of classical institutions and residences, presented a difficulty of blending a very modern and fast-paced institution into the location without disturbing the tranquility and balance of the urban fabric. Additionally, a recently developed standard branch layout for effective workflow further limited creative expression.
The design looked to its major challenge – its context – for a solution. The traditional setting of the location becomes a distinct factor that mediates in the design process, seeking to develop a building that demonstrates a likeness for the rough textures of the past and balances it with refined and polished textures of modern times.
By relatively distorting the program, the use of simple extrusions and a cantilever. The design broke the monotony of form and minimalist aesthetic insinuated by the layout. The result is a juxtaposition of forms and materials; a rough brick base that roots the building into its setting and a dynamic block of copper and reflective glass takes on the image of the surroundings while subtly projecting its identity to the street. A green wall of potted plants, (a now signature feature we created for the bank at 19 Bayo Kuku, adopted by the bank) shades and screens extensive glazing on the administrative level and further strengthens ties between the building and its locale.
